What is online counselling, and how does it work?

Online counselling connects you with a licensed therapist through video calls, offering the same support as in-person sessions from the comfort of your home.

Is online counselling as effective as face-to-face therapy?

Yes, studies have shown that online counselling is just as effective as in-person therapy for many individuals and issues.

How do I book a session?

To arrange a free 20-minute initial phone consultation, please complete the contact form or email me at chris@christopherbyrne.co.uk. This consultation is an opportunity to discuss your needs and see if we’re a good fit for working together.

When are sessions available?

I work most weekday evenings, with some availability during the day. If you have specific scheduling needs, let me know, and I’ll do my best to accommodate.
Sessions last for 50 minutes and we would normally, arrange a regular weekly slot for our sessions.

How much do sessions cost?

Sessions cost £55, and payment must be made 48 hours in advance. Similarly, cancellations or rescheduling must be made at least 48 hours in advance. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged in full.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies from person to person. Some people find short-term counselling (6–12 sessions) helpful for specific issues, while others prefer longer-term therapy for deeper exploration and personal growth. We can discuss what feels right for you.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

No, I work online only, providing therapy via Google Meet. I also use a VPN to ensure all data is confidential. This ensures flexibility and accessibility, allowing you to engage in counselling from a space where you feel comfortable.

What can counselling help with?

Counselling can support you through a range of emotional, mental, and psychological challenges, including:

Anxiety, stress, and overwhelm
Low mood and self-confidence
Relationship difficulties
Identity and self-exploration
Life transitions and personal growth

I have a special interest in working affirmatively with LGBTQ+ people, offering a supportive and non-judgmental space to explore identity, relationships, and the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.

What is your approach to counselling?

I practice pluralistic counselling, which means I draw on different therapeutic approaches to tailor sessions to your needs. Therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all process—together, we refine what works best for you, whether that’s structured techniques or a more open, exploratory approach.

What happens in the first session?

Your first full session is about getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, and discussing what you hope to gain from the process. We’ll explore how we might work together in a way that suits you best.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a fundamental part of counselling. What you share in sessions remains private, except in rare cases where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or when required by law. I will always explain these limits clearly at the start of our work together.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?

I ask for at least 48 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. If a session is cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice, the full session fee will still apply.

What technology do I need for online counselling?

You’ll need a stable internet connection, a microphone, and ideally a camera, and a private space where you feel comfortable and secure talking. Sessions can take place on Google Meet or Zoom.
